The Schwartz Center for Economic Policy and New America Foundation
Present
“It’s the Economic Recovery Plan, Stupid”

ECONOMISTS, BUSINESS EXECUTIVES DEBATE THE LONG-TERM RESPONSE TO
RECESSION:
CONSUMER SPENDING VS. INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT

Present New Publication, The Promise of Public Investment, Based on
Year-Long Series Questioning Conventional Wisdom on Fiscal Policy

WHAT:	With debate on the recession changing from “if” to
“when” to “how long”, The New School’s Schwartz Center
for Economic Policy Analysis (SCEPA) and New America Foundation will
host a panel of top economists and business executives titled, “It’s
the Economic Recovery Plan, Stupid.” SCEPA will also present a new
publication, The Promise of Public Investment, based on this year-long
series of forums designed to question the conventional wisdom on U.S.
economic policy.

The panel will discuss the economic and political realities behind the
debate on how best to stimulate the economy, including how a major
public infrastructure investment might serve as a centerpiece of a
longer-term recovery program. Topics will include an analysis of
short-term stimulus options, such as the rebate check package, and
long-term investment options which would authorize federal spending for
state and local projects including a congressional proposal by Senators
Dodd and Hagel and supported by Senators Obama and Clinton.
