Socialism & Market Economy: Achievements and Challenges of Vietnam’s
Revolution
Merle E. Ratner and Ngo Thanh Nhan
Tuesday, October 11 at 7:00 PM at The Brecht Forum
2005 marks the 30th anniversary of the victory of the Vietnamese people
against U.S. imperialism. The Vietnamese revolution has embarked on a bold
attempt to develop socialism while building up their economy using a
multi-sector market economy.
Drawing on recent visits to Vietnam, Merle and Nhan will examine the
current
state of the Vietnamese revolution. How is Vietnam combining socialism and
market economics? What are the gains and contradictions inherent in such a
synthesis? In one of the world’s poorest countries, how is Vietnam
doing in
eliminating poverty? What is Vietnam’s approach to grass roots democracy?
How is Vietnam dealing with the perils of global capital?
Merle Ratner is the Co-Chair of the Brecht Forum. She recently returned
from
a three month visit to Vietnam as the guest of the Ho Chi Minh Political
Academy
Ngo Thanh Nhan is a Brecht Forum Board member who frequently travels to
Vietnam and is a specialist in the traditional Vietnamese character scripts
Merle and Nhan are both Co-Coordinators of the Vietnam Agent Orange
Relief &
