Dear Friends,

Because of the complications of the move of the Brecht Forum to new
offices, there have been problems in publicizing classes being held
there. They have asked those of us teaching to spread the word for
classes still accepting students. Hence the announcement below which the
Brecht Forum asks you to mention to possibly interested folks:

Thursday, October 6
5:30 -7:30 pm
4-SESSION CLASS BEGINS

Basic Concepts in Marx's Capital

(Richard Wolff)

This course introduces Marx's basic contributions to understanding
modern economies. The first two class meetings will cover Volume 1's
theories of value, surplus, capital, class, exploitation, alienation,
and the instability of capitalism's cycles and crises. The third class
meeting will provide an overview of Marx's analyses (in Volumes 2 and 3)
of how industrial capitalists distribute the surpluses they take from
workers, and how their distributions (for example, to banks, merchants,
and the state) shape modern societies. Finally, the fourth class session
will examine Marx's theories of social change and revolution using his
volume 1 analysis of the transition from feudalism to capitalism and his
occasional remarks on transition from capitalism to communism.

Richard Wolff teaches economics at the University of Massachusetts.
Among other works, he is the author, with Stephen Resnick, of Knowledge
and Class: A Marxian Critique of Political Economy, and Class Theory and
History: Capitalism and Communism in the USSR.

Sliding scale: $45-$65
