The editors of *Workplace: A Journal for Academic Labor* are proud to
announce the release of issue 6.2 at web address http://www.workplace-
gsc.com . (Frequent readers may need to re-load the page to see the
new content.) In our latest installment, guest editor Julie Schmid
presents a lead section called “Successes and Setbacks in Academic
Labor Struggle,” which features the following essays by a range of
graduate employee and contingent faculty unionists:
“Putting Down Roots: Stabilizing the Contingent Academic Labor Union”
by Deborah Herman
“Learning to Be Labor” by William Vaughn
“Hard Carding and Soft Funding: How to Organize Ourselves and Our
Unions” by James Thompson
“Working Conditions and Learning Conditions after the National Labor
Relations Board's *Brown University* Decision” by Scott Henkel
“Competitive Unionism: Good, Bad, or Indifferent for Contingent
Faculty?” by Joe Berry
General feature articles for *Workplace* 6.2 include:
“Boomerangs of Academic Freedom” by Brian Martin
“Does the Online University Need Faculty, Adjuncts, or Clerks?” by
John Rothfork
“Why We ‘Profess’ Rather than Teach: Implications of the Gendered
Construction of Work for Academic Unions” by Lois Weiner
We also offer a selection of book reviews (edited by William Vaughn)
and our regular “Breaking News” segments (edited by Katherine Wills),
as well as a number of links to labor-oriented publications on the web.
New to this issue is the “Workplace Blog,” which you’ll find in our
menu bar just below the “Workplace Collective” link. Editor Wayne
Ross designed this forum to foster dialogue about the intersection of
labor activism with critical pedagogy, and hopes that educators K-16
will contribute to the conversation in the coming months.
Our next issue will feature a section on “Technology, Rights and the
Public Interest,” edited by Mary Bryson, Teresa Dobson, and Stephen
Petrina. Look for it within the year.
Thanks for reading, and thanks for your continuing support of our
efforts here at *Workplace.*
Solidarity,
Chris Carter
