I wouldn't doubt any involvement of Gus Hall with the autoworkers at
Flint, though I can't recall hearing of any.  In 1937, he was pretty
preoccupied with the Steelworkers Organizing Committee, leading
strikes in "Little Steel" around Youngstown and Warren.
