BAGHDAD, Iraq -- In the towns of Samarra and Hilla as many as 90
insurgents have been killed, the U.S. military and an Iraqi official
said on Saturday.

In a series of operations, U.S. aircraft dropped a series of 500-pound
bombs on "known enemy locations" near the Iraqi town of Samarra as part
of the operation, designed to deny insurgents access to the area around
the town, the military said in a statement.

Iraqi hospital officials said several people died, while the U.S.
military said 50 militants were killed in the operation, dubbed Cajun
Mousetrap III. There were no reported coalition casualties.

Residents said the bombing destroyed two houses, but the people who
lived in them were not there.

About nine Iraqis were killed and 40 injured in the fighting, said Jamal
al-Qeilani of Samarra General Hospital.

The military said soldiers the 1st Infantry Division's 2nd Brigade
Combat Team detained three suspected weapons suppliers and confiscated
weapons and bomb-making material during raids in Samarra, where
insurgents have battled coalition troops and Iraqi forces for the past
15 months.

Meanwhile, in the southern city of Hilla heavy fighting overnight
between Shiite militiamen and U.S. forces backed by Iraqi police killed
40 militants and three police, a senior Interior Ministry official said
on Saturday.

The official said the fighting erupted late on Friday in the Shiite city
and had eased by early on Saturday.

The militiamen loyal to radical Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr have rebelled
in seven other cities across southern and central Iraq.

Hilla lies 62 miles south of Baghdad and until now had been spared the
uprising.
